Area World Service Committee meeting, August 17th, 2024

The AWSC consists of the Assembly Officers, District Reps, Area Coordinators, and Liaison members, who meet between Assemblies to discuss Area and district matters, plan the agenda for the Assembly, initiate projects, and make recommendations to the Assembly.

The August committee meeting was held via hybrid. It was our first hybrid meeting and we had record-setting attendance.

Two members, Sarah S & Cindy K., from WSO, attended and presented on conflict resolution. They incorporated our alanon traditions and principles into the presentation on how to navigate through conflict. This was the highlight of the August meeting.

SCWS is doing well financially and will make recommendations at the November assembly; a contribution to WSO.

It is requested to members who make contributions to the SCWS via their group(s), to please add the group number(s) on the check or please make a notation if you are contributing via PayPal.

Below is the link to the area delegates report. https://www.scws-al-anon.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/2024-CA-S-AreaAssembly-Presentation.pdf

SCWS by-laws will be presented at the November assembly to evaluate and update. If you have any questions or comments please contact me.

Area World Service Committee (AWSC) meeting, February 17, 2024

There were no candidates at the November Assembly for Area Alternate Delegate, or Area Treasurer positions.. An Interim Treasurer and Interim Alternate Delegate were appointed to the Southern California World Service (SCWS) Board, by the Area Chair. These two Officer positions are being filled on an interim basis until the May SCWS Assembly. Members who meet the requirements set forth in the job descriptions for Alternate Delegate and Area Treasurer are encouraged to submit their resume. The resumes will be posted at least one month before the next Assembly in May. Group Representatives (GRs) will vote at the May assembly to fill the positions for the remainder of the three-year term. Members are encouraged to spread the word to see if anyone else may be interested in these positions. The job descriptions are posted on the SCWS website under “Elected Officers”. https://www.scws-al-anon.org/area-world-service-committee-meeting-information/

The SCWS has new equipment to use with the Spanish speaking members when needed.

The SCWS Area Bylaws were discussed and there were suggestions to amend and remove the District Representative (DR) prerequisite for being an Area Officer because it has become a challenge to fill service positions. This will require a discussion at the Assembly before the DR requirement can be removed. The DR requirement is in the Area Bylaws and the Area Election Procedures that have previously been approved by GRs. The DR requirement for Officer positions is also in the Al-Anon/Alateen Service Manual. A newer draft of proposed/amended Bylaws are on the SCWS website under the November 2023 Assembly. Discussion and possible approval of the draft 2023 Bylaws was on the agenda to be discussed at the November assembly, however due to lack of time, this topic was not discussed. It was proposed at the AWSC to complete this piece of Area business at the May 2024 Assembly.

KBDM presentation and conflict resolution was discussed. See below links to SCWS website for more information. https://www.scws-al-anon.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/1.KBDM-ppt-6_23.pdf, https://www.scws-al-anon.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/4.-CR-Grp-PracticeUpdated-2_10_24-1_9_22.pdf

SCWS Assembly, November 18, 2023

1. Coordinators gave a summary of their positions Deadline for resume is December 1st.

2. The Finance Task Force gave a presentation regarding the Treasurer position. Since this position wasn’t filled at the assembly, the GR’s voted to give the officers the authority to decide whether to contract a bookkeeper or accountant at no more than $25,000 per year.

3. The outgoing treasurer reported that she is seeing more district contributions. It was voted for the SCWS to contribute $12,000 to WSO, bringing the year total to $30,000. SCWS accepts contributions via PayPal or check. It was requested that future contributions include the WSO registered group number. https://www.scws-al-anon.org/contributions/

4. There are approximately 100 SCWS Temporary electronic meetings (TEM’s), left. SCWS total registered group count is 1050, which is more than any other area in the alanon fellowship

Area World Service Committee (AWSC), August 2023

Treasurer’s Report

As of July 31st, total expenses 47,226.63 year to date.

Income is 46,923.71.

Cash on Hand: 96,432.66, ample reserve 70,349.55, checking account balance 26,083.11

Alternate Delegate’s Report

Why do we contribute to WSO? When SCWS has surplus funds, they make a distribution to service arms. Just as what happens at the group level. We also fund special projects as needed. The only service arm that is above the area is WSO. Only difference between area and a group is that the area is a legal entity.

SOS 2024

January 20th, Main Speaker will be Tom Coffey from WSO: Will be held via zoom.

Electronic Groups

EG’s registered with geographic areas such as SCWS, are now searchable and displayed on al-anon.org.

WSO has suggested that Temporary Electronic Meetings either become an EG or return to physical location within a year of area’s vote, which was voted and accepted at our November 19, 2022 assembly.

There are over 900 Global meetings.

If a Global meeting wants to move to a geographical areas that has accepted EG’s, they now have that option.

Treasurer Task Force

Charge: The Treasurer Task Force has been studying the possibility of finding help for the treasurer. There’s also a lack of volunteers to take on the Treasurer position. They made 2 recommendations.

1. Chair appoints an assistant to the Treasurer on a 3-year trail basis with the GRs’ approval.

2. The officers would hire an independent accountant or bookkeeper with the GRs’ approval for the budget.

Board of Trustees Policy Committee Update

Discussed gendered language of the Steps and Traditions in alignment with AlAnon’s legacy? Conversation will continue in the future.

Next years WSC will be April 18-April 21

Assembly Thought Force

Has investigated the possibility of Zoom, in person, and hybrid assemblies. It appears hybrid would serve most members. Some areas use professional services to work the hybrid meetings. This group is ready to move to a Task Force.

Group events for Alateen: has increased. There is more Alateen participation at conventions and roundups.

SCAC was successful.

New daily reader is a success. There will be a Just for Tonight bookmark for Alateen in English and Spanish.

Coordinators went through their positions requirements.

New panel will be elected at the November 2023 assembly.

Road Trip is Saturday 10/28/23 at the LAX Hilton. Invitations will be going out around September 5. Registration will probably be $35-$45 including lunch.
