VOLUNTEER FOCUS OF THE MONTH: SUSAN L.

Your AIS Office can only function with the help of our wonderful volunteers. So, each month, we highlight one amazing volunteer by having them answer three questions. Thank you for your service, Deana C!

1) What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

When I arrived at Al-Anon, my world had become really small, and I was very isolated by the disease.

Volunteering for service got me to meetings and introduced me to so many dear friends that I still have to this day. It gave me a sense of purpose and joy and got me to meetings where I could hear the hope that the program offered to those of us affected by the disease of alcoholism. I can never repay the amazing life that Al-Anon has given me, so that is why I continue to do service now, 21 years later. I heard early on that I had to give it away to keep it!

2) What is your favorite piece of conference-approved literature?

I really love all the literature, and I think I have almost all of it, but I would have to say that “From Survival to Recovery” is such an amazing book. When I was a newcomer, my first home group would read pages 267-268. It starts, “If we willingly surrender ourselves to the spiritual discipline of the Twelve Steps, our lives can be transformed!” That passage used to tear me up every time it was read at a meeting, and it gave me so much hope that my life could be transformed if I was willing to do the work. Working the steps absolutely transformed my life and it has been an amazing journey!

3) What experience, strength, and hope would you share with a newcomer?

Keep coming back! Attend meetings often, volunteer for service, and get a sponsor! The greatest gifts of this program for me were volunteering for service and working the steps with my sponsor. I bought this set of dice at the San Diego Spring Round Up a couple of years ago. The instructions were to ask yourself, “What is the problem?” You roll the dice, and it says, “Me.” The second question you ask is, what is the solution?

You roll the dice, and it says, “God”. No matter what is going on in my life, that has always been true for me: when I can get out of my own way and let God handle people, places, and things, my life is far more serene!
