Dear Grateful Al-Anon Members,

Your San Diego Al-Anon/Alateen Information Service office and board have been working hard this year on making Al-Anon and Alateen more accessible via our website and social media, establishing new meetings, and creating awareness to more diversified communities through public outreach and events. Your contributions are critical for our continued expansion.

In September, we launched our Non-Event Fundraiser, designed to be a personal contribution of gratitude to our local office. Even if you have already sent a contribution, we ask you to consider an additional contribution, as our goal for this appeal has not yet reached what we had hoped.

We also ask that you announce our Non-Event Fundraiser at your meetings as soon as possible before our fundraiser ends on Sunday, November 6. Just click on the above link or go to www.AlanonSanDiego.org and click on the pink button. Group contributions are welcome and very appreciated.

Hi everyone!

Anita R has asked me to write the Board letter this month about the 2024 Al-Anon Service Board. We are now soliciting nominations for the San Diego Intergroup Service Board. I have had the privilege of serving for almost two years, and I highly recommend the experience. I promise that it will enrich your Al-Anon life. The only requirements are:

• Al-Anon member for two (2) years

• No dual membership in AA and Al-Anon

• Two (2) year commitment

You can go to www.alanonsandiego.org/doing-service and scroll down for job descriptions and estimated monthly hours. You do not need to specify a desired position; existing and newly elected Board members meet in December to decide who fills which roles.

Most of us are on the Board because someone asked us. Encourage your sponsee or someone you admire from your home group to serve. All Nomination forms (which can be found at www.alanonsandiego.org (scroll down to the Announcements section) and are due by Wednesday, September 6, 2023, by 2 pm to Dan B at [email protected] or can be mailed or faxed to our Al-Anon office at (619)296-0840.

Message From Your Board

I was privileged to attend the Al-Anon International Convention with AA and Alateen participation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I joined our Al-Anon family from Southern California on this incredible 4-day experience and met many more friends worldwide. Al-Anon is truly a worldwide fellowship. Almost 4,000 members joined in the celebration.

The first day was "A Day of Connection," with speakers and sessions sharing how service and outreach have helped us grow individually and spiritually. The large meetings began with reading the Serenity Prayer in English, Spanish, French, and ASL. There were over 80 sessions to select from joining in the following days. Some examples are the 3A's, boundaries, the new daily reader, humor, and more.

A conference highlight was a party on the plaza where music played while we danced and mingled. In the Parade of Love, members could represent their state or country as they strolled around the large hall. On the conference's closing day, we had 3 moving speakers at a Spiritual Meeting that ended with our Al-Anon Indian members in a drum circle playing as we exited.

We are already halfway through 2023, and we’ve done some great things. The San Diego AIS Board has hired a Web Assistant and Office Assistant. Our Web Coordinator has managed many updates and improvements to San Diego’s Al-Anon website and, along with the Interim Intercom Chair, they have made beautiful changes to the Intercom. The Outreach Liaison has consistently extended to Spanish and English communities the help and hope Al-Anon has to offer. Also, the Interim Alateen Chair has reached out to schools and meetings, spreading more knowledge of how we might help our teens gain the same help and hope.

I invite our members to practice outreach wherever they can and spread the serenity Al-Anon has given you. July is packed with events beginning with the Al-Anon International Convention and ending on July 2, SCAC (Southern California Alateen Conference) July 8-9 is happening for the first time in over six years, and Al-Anon will have a booth for a second-year at the Pride Festival. We finish the month with a salute to our long-timers with a Long-Timers Sereni-Tea on July 29, in which all are welcome.

We just had an extraordinary meeting with our ISRs this past Saturday. ISRs are vital to our membership as they provide an invaluable link to the groups. This link is not as strong as it could be because, of the 170 registered groups, only 37% (63) of them have an ISR; of those, less than 25% (25-30) attended the meeting. There are only six meetings a year, are on Zoom, and only an hour long. It’s easy, fun, and a great way to boost your recovery. Please make sure your group has an ISR and participates in the meetings. And, if they don’t, maybe it’s YOU!

We have a robust Al-Anon program in San Diego County, and this has been an exciting month! A huge shout out to the Glee Anon group. Thank you to the planners, the cast, and the crew for making this event happen. We also had another fantastic San Diego Spring Round Up, and that was due to all of the volunteers that put in countless hours behind the scenes and during the event. Lastly, thank you to all who participated in these events.

I hope to see you at the office at our Al-Anon and Alateen Birthday Celebration on May 13!

Message From Your Board - April 2023

Our AIS Board is complete! We welcomed Ron P. as the Interim Alateen Chairperson. His past and present involvement with Alateens and AMIAS’ has blessed Al-Anon for years.

We are also pleased to announce that our new AIS Office Assistant starts on March 21. Her name is Rina, and will be a great asset to the San Diego Al-Anon office. Be sure to stop by and say hello.

The San Diego Al-Anon office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10am-4pm. Saturdays are available by appointment only.

We are excited about our first office fundraiser, Glee Anon, on March 25 in Del Mar. We hope to see you there and at the San Diego Roundup April 7-9. We are excited to have an Alateen Day on April 8 from 9am-9pm.
